
Senegal win their second AFCON title from an extra time strike by Papa Gueye
Senegal was able to just barely beat the host country, Morocco, with a last-minute extra-time goal from Papa Gueye.It was a heart-wrenching moment when Brahim missed the penalty that could have seen Morocco win the championship after a wait of 50 years. The tension on the field could be felt throughout the match.
The tension got even higher in the final moments, with the penalty awarded to Morocco, was palpable. It was quite inspiring to see the Senegal players stand their ground to go back to the field, after they initially stormed out in protest over the penalty awarded to Morocco. Sadio Mane led by example in encouraging other players to go back to the field. Pape Gueye who struck in the 94th minute to ensure victory for the Lions of Teranga!
It is the second AFCON title for Senegal in the past three championships. They initially won their first title against Egypt in Yaounde in theyear 2022.
With Sadio Mane now having claimed his title Last night, he joins Roger Miller and Samuel Eto, o as the only three men to achieve multiple CAF Player of the Year Awards and multiple AFCON Titles in Africa’s history.
