The U-14 Legacy Football Academy was accorded warm cheers at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Monday following their triumphant tour to Sweden, where they became the first team from East Africa to be crowned winners of the Gothia Cup Boys Under-14 Play-off A Trophy.

Family members, academy staff, supporters, and football fans thronged the airport to honor the young heroes for their spectacular feat, which has earned recognition for Kenyan youth football on the world scene.

It is only two days since Legacy secured the trophy by beating Lerums IS of Sweden 1-0 in the final game at SKF Arena in Gothenburg.

The triumph marked a spectacular performance in the tournament. The young boys went unbeaten, winning all nine games, scoring 33 goals while conceding only three in the process.

Adding to their glory, Christian Amani was adjudged the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the Boys Under-14 category.

As soon as he returned home, Amani shared his feelings regarding the experience of a lifetime.

"I have had a great experience. The games were challenging, but we gave our best. We scored many goals, and the MVP award was given to me. I thank Legacy Academy for giving me this experience. It has really helped in building my career," said Amani.

According to head coach Derrick Ochieng Otieno, this victory came as a fruit of the months of hard work and perseverance after last year's heartbreaking loss at semi-finals.

"I have had a successful experience. We traveled with five teams, and out of the five teams, U14, the team that I am coaching, has scored 33 goals, conceded just three goals, and my player also won us the MVP award.

We were really optimistic this time, and this went into the players' minds that they would make it. Last year, they lost in the semi-finals and this year was all about redemption," he said.

Otieno commended his team for their belief in themselves and feels that this success is just the start of many for the academy.

"This success shows a lot about how our team fought to achieve this and brought us a trophy. We are definitely going places in the next few years," he said.

A Tournament to Remember

The journey towards winning the tournament by Legacy was nothing short of dominant.

The Kenyan side started off the tournament in Group 13 with a win of 4-0 against IF Centern Vit and then hammered Solängens BK 7-1. The winning streak continued as they won 7-0 against IFK Nyköping 1 and finished their group stage in style with a 3-0 win against Virestad IF.

Their progress continued into the knockout stage.

They won the Round of 16 by defeating IF Centern Blå with a score of 2-0. In the Round of Eight, they beat Nyköping BI with another impressive performance of 3-0. With a 3-1 victory over CEF 18 Tucumán of Argentina, they qualified for the semi-finals where they easily beat ProGen FC of Ghana 3-0. They faced hosts Lerums IS in the final and won 1-0. Adama David Jesse was the man behind the goal that secured Legacy a historic victory.

Their success at the tournament made Legacy Football Academy the first club to be crowned Playoff A champions in the Boys Under-14 category at the Gothia Cup, the largest youth football competition in the world.

Outstanding Performances for the Legacy Teams

Although it was the Under-14 team that took center stage, the rest of Legacy's teams put up some outstanding performances during their visit to Sweden.

The Under-13 team came first in their group having accumulated four victories, a draw and a loss, with notable goal-scorers being Brivon Nyandika, Jack Weko and Gavin Okech.

The Under-12 boys placed second in their group, scoring six points in total, due to the fantastic performances by Mwangi Njenga, Zandro Obiero and Elijah Luusa.

In addition to this, the Under-16 team won a second-place medal in their group with two wins and two losses. The best players on this team were Innocent Media, Mohammed Mbemba and Cyril Obiero who scored the most goals for them.

Legacy Football Academy had five teams participating in the Sweden tour - Under-11, Under-12, Under-13, Under-14 and Under-16. All teams were proud of representing their motherland in such an event, but the winners became the Under-14 team.
